How to prevent credit card fraud

Credit card and debit card fraud resulted in the loss of around £430m last year. With our increasing dependency on plastic, consumers need to use credit cards with greater caution. To help you protect your plastic, we have outlined some steps to avoid credit card fraud.

1) Sign the reverse of your card

promptly writing your signature on the card makes fraudulent activity more difficult.

2) Keep your PIN safe

memorise it if possible or change it to a more memorable code, such as the year you were born.

3) Hide your PIN

if you need to write your pin down, don’t carry it with your card, ie in your wallet or purse.

4) Check statements

90% of people admitted to not checking their credit card statements. Any misuse should be reported to your bank immediately.

5) Destroy bank/credit card statements

ideally by fire or shredder. (Although you may want to store them in a safe place for 12 months).

6) Banking online

never access a bank’s website via a link as opposed to writing the web address in your browser. Links can lead to phoney websites.

7) PIN request

never respond to an email from your ‘bank’ asking for account details or your PIN. It is most assuredly a scam.
